South India is a market that no healthcare company wants to miss out on. And to join this league is Fortis Healthcare, which has acquired RM Hospital in Bangalore, a franchisee of the Apollo Group. Fortis also acquired Malar Hospitals in Chennai in September 2007 and plans to use the Malar brand to expand in the city.
Shivender Singh, Managing Director, Fortis Healthcare, says, “We have an aggressive plan for the south and will hopefully use the Malar entity to expand in our southern operations.”
Fortis is entering a market that is already dominated by the Apollo Group, which recently announced to launch 25 mid-sized hospitals in tier-II cities. But Fortis says that it would focus on the bigger cities in the south, for the time being.
The Indian healthcare market is valued at a whopping USD 34 billion and given the recent media attention that south India got for its medical tourism, it won’t be difficult for Fortis to spread its wing in this region.
